Your first list

From the Speak List user guide · updated 2026-10-20.

  1. Open the app. The welcome screen is ready when you have no lists yet.
  2. Tap Speak a list. Say items with a short pause between them: “milk … eggs … bread.” Each pause becomes its own item.
  3. Or use Quick add to type or paste — one line becomes one item.
  4. Need quantity, notes, or a reminder while adding? After Speak or Quick add, open the Details tab (or the pencil on a row). There is no separate Details button on the welcome screen.
  5. You can also start from Templates (underlined link under the examples). Weeknight Pasta Dinner is a good first try for cooking.

To name a list by voice, include the word “list” anywhere in your first phrase — for example “Costco list”, “list for Costco”, or “test list for workout” — pause, then say your items.

There is no account step. Your list is already on your device.

Templates worth trying first

Templates are grouped by list type (welcome → underlined Templates, or New list → Templates). You tap to preview, then Create this list. At the very bottom, More sample lists online opens the free List Library on our website (plainstone.app/speaklist/lists.html) — printable lists you can also copy straight into the app. The same link lives in Help. Good first picks:

Tasks & RoutinesMorning Routine or Leaving the HouseSimple check-off routines. Sunday Reset is a weekly tidy-up; Before Bed (Meds & Safety) is evening medications plus home safety (door, stove, night-light, hearing aids/glasses, keys) — NOT sleep habits; Evening Wind-Down owns those

After your first list (the 2-minute tour)

  1. Tap your new list to open it, and tap an item's circle to check it off.
  2. Tap Read out and let the phone read the list to you.
  3. Tap an item, then Set reminder under it, and give it a time. Check Reminders to see whether it was scheduled; sound depends on the alert type and phone settings.
  4. When you care about the list, do one backup (home screen → down-arrow → Back up all lists). Keep the file somewhere you can access from your new phone, and restore it there.
